Q: What is the history of the Dekker Foundation?
A: The Dekker Foundation was started in 1997 by David
Dekker, with the support of his family members. Because
of the family’s experience with anti-Semitism
in Europe before immigrating to the U.S., and because
of the family’s activity in scientific publishing
through Marcel Dekker, Inc., the Foundation was intended
to serve two purposes: 1) support tolerance and social
diversity endeavors, and 2) give back to the scientific
community via educational and professional rewards
to deserving individuals. These purposes remain squarely
a part of the Foundation’s mission, but other
interests and activities have evolved as the Foundation
has grown.
Q: Does the Dekker Foundation provide educational
grants and/or professional awards?
A: Yes. The Dekker Foundation provides over $250,000
in grants and awards. The Foundation usually establishes
such grants and awards through partnerships with other
not-for-profit societies and associations. Such programs
are developed to address particular areas of need
or growth, as determined by the trustees.
Q: What is the Foundation’s policy development
process?
A: Evaluating, modifying, and redesigning the Foundation’s
policies and programs is a continuous process. This
process recognizes the overall goals the Foundation
strives to achieve, with educational and diversity
goals integrated into all planning and decision making.
Q: How else does the Dekker Foundation contribute
to achieve its goals?
A: Besides charitable giving, The Dekker Foundation
uses its publishing and communications experience
to help disseminate information that supports its
overall goals, often in partnership with other entities.
Such dissemination can occur through such mediums
as print, web, multi-media, and/or syndication.
